I recently visited Fractured Landscapes and How We Heal by Jaskirt Dhaliwal-Boora at The New Art Gallery Walsall. The exhibition explores how creativity and nature can play a role in healing trauma resulting from violence and abuse.

As a person-centred counsellor, I am really interested in the connection between art, creativity, and counselling. Creativity can support the therapeutic process, offering ways to connect with or express what can feel difficult to put into words. This exhibition highlighted how creativity and nature can help hold space for healing, gently bearing witness and supporting the process of making personal sense of trauma.

Walking through the exhibition, I noticed how the space itself invited reflection. The mix of images, materials, and nature evoked a sense of contemplation rather than being prescriptive. It reminded me of the therapeutic process: there is no rush, no right way to engage, but rather a space to sit with what emerges, noticing feelings, memories, and thoughts as they arise.

For me, this exhibition reflected some core values of the person-centred approach and  practice: the importance of creating safe, non-judgmental spaces where individuals can explore their experiences at their own pace and served as a valuable expression of how art, creativity, and nature can offer support and space for those affected by trauma.

It also reminded me of the potential for art and creativity to support counselling work, helping people reflect, process, and find meaning in challenging experiences.

Experiences like this remind us that healing and growth is not easy, it doesn't follow a straight line, but as Carl Rogers described when a safe, accepting, and empathic environment is offered, change seems to occur naturally.

I felt this exhibition created a space that mirrored that allowing reflection and insight to emerge without pressure or expectation.

The exhibition runs in Walsall until 21st June 2026 and will tour to Open Eye Gallery in November. You can find more details on the gallery’s website here.
